I had the very disconcernting experience of selling some of my books to a kid who I could be the father of -- for a sizeable discount because my goal is to have the damn things READ instead of slabbed.

When I mentioned that I had comics on microfiche the reaction was hilarious.

It was as if I had announced that I was going back to the scriptorium to illuminate a breviary.

I

FEEL

OLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD.

Welcome to the club, keeds.

I used to think of people who didn't remember Jack Kennedy as being really young. Then it was Bobby and Martin Luther King. Then Nixon. Now there are adults walking around out there who barely remember Ronald Reagan as President, let alone the shock of his going from being a joke to being President in the first place. Before you know it, it'll be Clinton.

I think "microfiche" is what was so funny to him, not the fact that you READ the comics on microfiche. If you'd said that you have old comics on dvd-rom, he'd have said "cool."

A slick lawyer from Little Rock.
He's (still!) married to the junior Senator from New York.
He was for a while inaccurately identified as a liberal, even though he's at best a wishy washy centrist who can cater to corporations with the worst of 'em..

So I gathered. Ironic really. Libraries still use microfiche and microfilm extensively. It will probably be around for another half century at least.

The kid probably doesn't even know where the library is. He goes home and boots up his CPU for all the world's knowledge.

Thank God comics were not reprinted on those microfilm spools.

40 and getting older.
